The moment you go to press SEND and the power goes out

That moment when you sit down to press SEND on the novel you’ve just completed ON THE DAY IT IS DUE TO THE EDITOR…and the power goes out in the whole neighborhood AS YOUR FINGER IS HOVERING OVER THE SEND BUTTON.

And because crazy forces are clearly at work, the power chooses to stay out for the next twenty-four hours, and the “little snow event” that was supposed to leave 1-3 inches of snow instead dumped nearly a foot of wet, clumpy snow, and all day long while you are pacing around wishing for wi-fi to resume, trees and branches are crashing around outside. (Look left to get a glimpse on our back yard after the storm.)

BUT! You manage late in the afternoon to get out of the house and get to Starbucks, where the universe allows you to send your manuscript.

On time after all.

AHHHHHHHHH….”The Survivor’s Guide to Family Happiness” put up a good fight all the way to the end, but now it is off to find its way in the world.

Sometimes I think this may have been a better system for writing a novel. Demons sometimes live in the computer.

I always like a happy ending!

    Nothing better than making deadline.

I know. As newspaper people, we had deadlines drummed into us, didn’t we?
    Thank goodness for Starbucks.

    Hope you’re doing well, Patti!

Next time you can use the “fear of power out” as an excuse to go and get some coffee and a scone on Send Day. Goodness knows you deserve it. Looking forward to reading your next book.
